Thetford Mines, |
Regional Center |
Thetford Mines is the largest urban centre in the region. With 26,861 residents, the city is an active
business centre where industry and the environment live harmoniously side by side.
Nestled in a valley in the foothills of the Appalachians, the City of Thetford Mines was founded in 1876
following the discovery of asbestos. Asbestos mining has had a major impact on the regional economy as
evidenced by the large rock piles dotting the horizon.
The new city formed in 2001 from the merger of Black Lake, Robertsonville, Pontbriand, Thetford-Sud and
Thetford Mines is now made up of urban areas, expansive forests and agricultural land.
