The SDE region of Thetford welcomes the creation of the monitoring office of the Quebec Central railway rehabilitation project

VERSION FRANÇAISE

THETFORD MINES, JUNE 9, 2021. The Société de développement économique de la région de Thetford (SDE) welcomes the initiative of the Transport Ministry of Québec to set up a monitoring office for the rehabilitation of the Quebec Central Railway.

"The community is concerned about the project, and we have been asking for an update on the file for months. Our manufacturers and industrialists need to know the timelines. This announcement is therefore warmly welcomed. The objective of the monitoring office is to inform the community of the progress of the rehabilitation project, to ensure transparency at each step of the project and to allow the community to express its concerns and expectations," said Luc Rémillard, general manager of the SDE Thetford region.

"As such, at the first meeting of the committee on May 27, the Thetford region had the opportunity to reiterate to the ministry's authorities the importance of doing everything possible to bring forward the commissioning of the Tring-Jonction / Thetford section to the end of 2023 rather than 2025. Moreover, the project to rehabilitate the Tring-Jonction / Thetford railroad is part of Bill 66, an act to accelerate certain infrastructure projects," he continued.

He also mentions that the region's representatives have assured their full collaboration with the ministry's professionals to find solutions or ways to move up the timelines.

"In a letter sent to the Quebec Minister of Transport, Mr. François Bonnardel, last March, we reiterated the serious concerns of the political, social, economic and business communities of the Thetford region regarding the timeline for the implementation of the section leading to Thetford Mines (Black Lake sector). All options and measures must be taken so that the schedule is optimized with a possibility of making the multimodal rail and road transshipment area accessible and functional in Thetford Mines, no later than the fall of 2023," concluded Marc-Alexandre Brousseau, president of the SDE and mayor of Thetford.
